Deep tissue massage is a technique that’s mainly used to treat musculoskeletal issues, such as strains and sports injuries. This type of therapy focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue and it is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as stiff neck and upper back, low back pain, leg muscle tightness, and sore shoulders.
Some of the same strokes are used as classic massage therapy, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to reach the sub-layer of muscles and the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles).
This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury and reduce tension in muscle and tissue. It can also promote faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation as far as there is no aggravation on the inflamed area.
